Digital technology has been a fantastic addition to the world of entertainment. Not too long ago we were dependant on analog technologies like VHS for films, then came digital. DVD technology was only the surface of digital entertainment, however, the Blu-Ray disc arrived and raised the bar even higher for entertainment.

In 2002 the Blu-Ray Disc Association was created to bring us Blu-Ray technologies. The term "Blu-Ray" was a coined due to the fact the technology employees a blue laser as a way to read the discs. This was a contrast to the red laser technology that was utilized for DVD technology. Sony lead the way with the innovative Blu-Ray technology. It was the Sony Corporation that started the development of blue laser optical technologies prior to the year 2000. This work result in the increased capacity and higher resolution images we see nowadays with Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray discs went into production in 2006, two years after their technical specs were finalized in 2004. Sony, the company that created the Blu-Ray technology was amongst the 1st to release movies in the new format. All this met up with the quick uptake of the high definition tv along with the release of a competing technology, the progressive scan DVD.

In the early days, Blu-Ray movies were very costly. Similarly, Blu-Ray players were also extremely costly and out of reach of many individuals. With the launch of the PlayStation 3 however, customers were given a brand new, more affordable choice. For less than the price a regular Blu-Ray player, shoppers could get both a Blu-Ray player and games machine in 1.

Buyers picked up the pace to buy Blu-Ray discs as production costs were curbed over the subsequent couple of years. During this time the capability to burn to Blu-Ray media was also released. The storage space that was offered was quite an upgrade from the regular blank DVD disc. A single layer Blu-Ray disc could store a massive 25 GB of information. This amount was doubled to 50 GB on dual layered discs.

These days Blu-Ray technology is known to most, and it is the 1st option in move format. Many of the older movies are even being converted into Blu-Ray format.
